1. Water Deeply, but Infrequently

Rather than watering your lawn every day with a light sprinkling, it's better to water deeply but less frequently. Aim for about 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week, including rainfall. This encourages deep root growth, which helps your grass stay resilient during dry periods.

2. Best Time to Water

The best time to water is early in the morning, ideally before 10:00 AM. Watering during this time allows the grass to dry off by midday, reducing the risk of fungal diseases. Avoid watering in the evening, as it can leave your lawn damp overnight, promoting unwanted diseases.

3. Know When to Adjust for Weather

4. Watering Tips for New Grass or Sod

4. Watering Tips for New Grass or Sod

If you have new grass or laid sod, it’s important to keep the soil consistently moist. Water lightly several times a day during the first few weeks until the grass has rooted in well. Usually about 10 mins per zone two to three times a day for 3 weeks. After 3 weeks you can cut the water back and resume your normal watering schedule. You can mow after the grass is at least 3 inches tall.

5. Irrigation

If you have an irrigation system, consider using a rain sensor that adjusts watering schedules based on the weather conditions. This will help you save water and keep your lawn healthy without over-watering.

6. Signs of Overwatering or Underwatering

  • Overwatering:      Yellowing or soggy spots, moss growth, or standing water.
  • Underwatering:      Dry, brown, or crispy grass blades, especially in hot weather.
